Here are nine small businesses run by Newcastle students

As if getting a degree wasn’t impressive enough

A degree is hard enough as it is, but have you ever considered running a small business at the same time? Well, these Newcastle students have! From earrings to hot tubs, we’re sure there’s a student business for everything. Here are some of our favourites!

@Harryshottubs

Harry’s Hot Tubs was started by Biomedical Sciences student Harry in February 2020 and has quickly become the number-one hot tub rental company in the North of England. I’m sure that by now you’ve probably seen multiple insta stories of your mates sat in a hot tub whilst sipping on the bubbly… you’re suddenly so jealous and NEED to get in one – well if that’s you then you need to hear about this Newcastle student’s business!

Harry told The Newcastle Tab: “as well as delivering a friendly and reliable service, we are official fundraisers for Mind, in aid of mental health, and Once Upon a Smile, a children’s bereavement service based in Greater Manchester.”

If you’re interested in hiring a hot tub, check out the insta or the website.

@Pinky.ink.designs

Pinky Ink Designs is run by Chloe, who studies Linguistics at Newcastle. She set up Pinky Ink Designs in June 2020, and has already gained over 2,000 Instagram followers!

Chloe makes and sells handmade polymer clay jewellery, prints and other gifts mainly for girls.

All of her items are super cute and can be bought through Instagram dm’s.

@Dewyoucrochet

Dew You Crochet is a crochet account started in June 2020 by Alice, who studies Journalism at Newcastle. She specialises in custom fashion and gifts, however, also produces ready to buy items which can be bought through Instagram dm’s or on Depop.

Any item seen on her Instagram can be made to size, and are fully customisable to whatever your heart desires.

@Momentslabelling

Moments labelling was started in July 2020 by Jack, who studies Business Management at Newcastle.

Moments Labelling is a streetwear brand, who work with university creatives and have a focus on giving back to local charities in Newcastle.

Jack told The Newcastle Tab: “The idea behind it comes from a drunken conversation about sharing individuals that surround us at University and celebrating them by sharing their work for more; this is all whilst allowing them the freedom to take moments in the direction they want. It’s been awesome to work with past creatives and are always looking for future creatives.”

If you’re loving this brand, make sure to give them a follow on Instagram, check out their website and drop them a message!

@Sophiepercidesigns

Sophie Perci Designs was founded in May 2020 by Sophie, who studies Conservation of Fine Art at Northumbria.

Sophie makes a range of polymer clay earrings, which are bold and bright, and a must for every outfit. Our favourites are definitely her highland cow earrings, and they’re so cute – everyone needs a pair. She has over 1,000 Instagram followers so far, as this is the main platform for her business.

Her earrings are available to buy through Instagram dm’s.

@Zoecotterillart

Zoe Cotterill Art is run by Northumbria graphic design student Zoe, who started her business two years ago. She focuses on hand drawn architectural illustrations of iconic city landmarks, and creates prints, greeting cards and gifts based on these designs.

I think we can all agree, we NEED an illustration of the beloved landmark Soho, to remind us of pre-Covid times, or her gorgeous Baltic print which is much more wholesome.

@Scarletsews

Scarlet Sews is run by Scarlet, and although her account is also very new, we love what she’s doing so far! Scarlet specialises in embroidery and everything on her account is stunning.

No Newcastle student’s wardrobe is complete without a custom embroidered design on their fave jumper and Scarlet is deffo our go-to girl for all things embroidery.

@Beths.beads

Beth’s Beads was created in May 2020 by Beth, who studies Marine Biology at Newcastle. She makes gorgeous handmade earrings, which are so affordable and fashionable.

Beth told The Newcastle Tab: “Making my earrings is a haven from the stress of uni and 2020 in general. It’s a great creative outlet filled with passion and care and seeing other people enjoy my creations as much as I do is very special.”

Her earrings are available to buy through Instagram dm’s!

@Frayedneon

Frayed Neon is one of the youngest businesses on this list, as it was started in September 2020. Georgia, who studies Biomedical Sciences at Newcastle started Frayed Neon to give new life to preloved vintage clothing and makes unique stand-out pieces (particularly laced corset using varying materials from denim to woven tapestry).

Her clothes are typically one off pieces so anything you buy will make you stand out, and you need to add her designs to your wardrobe! You can buy her clothes through Depop and we definitely recommend you give it a look!
