There’s a Mobike bar crawl happening in Newcastle this month

I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my biiiike

On the 24th of November there is going to be a bar crawl with a bit of a twist. Instead of strolling and eventually staggering from bar to bar, all of it will be done on Mobikes.

Mobikes were introduced to Newcastle in mid October as well as London and Manchester during the summer. All you need is the app to unlock the bikes and you're good to go. They can be picked up and dropped off anywhere within the designated zones. After paying an initial deposit the bicycles are only 50p per half an hour so not bad going on the financial side either.

(Now there's a law against cycling whilst drunk, so naturally we can't condone out of control riding but that's only if you lose the ability to control your bike which we are certain none of you responsible drinkers will do…)

Monument seems to have acquired 'the place to be' title this winter with a sing-along of Africa by Toto already going viral on Facebook last month. This event is supposedly set to start at Newcastle's central meeting spot too but the official route has not yet been given. The admin of the group has said:

'As more & more Mobikes take over our city, we thought it was about time to put them to good use by gathering a push bike army and flying bar to bar like Lance Armstrong on gary.'

Despite over 800 people having shown interest and with 250 people currently having clicked 'Going', there have been some people clearly opposed to the idea. One Facebook user simply stated 'Not very safe is being drunk on a bike.' Another person took to directly messaging the event organiser to say:

'Just seen your post about the Mobike bar crawl: Being a total killjoy here but what about the people who pay for the service and may need to use a bike to get from A to B while you are on said bar crawl!? Perhaps having a bar crawl with your own bikes or on foot could be a better option.'

Although valid points, it seems where ever there's fun, there's a fun sponge. As the admin put themselves: 'The "Own Bikes Or On Foot Bar Crawl – Newcastle" doesn't have the same ring to it…' and we would have to agree. If this event actually goes ahead it will, no doubt, be a wheelie good time…

So if you've recovered from that awful pun, go check out the Facebook event which you can see here and get yourself down to Monument in a few weeks time for some cheap thrills drinking, pedalling and drinking some more.
