Students evacuated from Old Library building after fire engines called

Fire engines were called to the Old Library building in the centre of campus today after a fire alarm amid reports of students being able to smell smoke.

At around 14.20, the Old Library and Old Library building were both evacuated. Students and staff were taken outside, and some were told to wait in the lobby of the Percy building opposite.

One student who had been in a lecture on floor three at the time told The Tab she had seen two fire engines with two sets of hoses.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that any fire must have been on the higher floors of the building as the hoses went up to the top.

Smoke was reportedly not visible although some students reported that they could smell it. There was also a report of a fireman on top of the building.

Students were told they would not be allowed back into the building before the end of the lecture and were told to leave.

The building was reopened at around 15.20. It is not clear yet what the cause of incident was.
