Heaton burglar found asleep on couch of the same house he burgled

He was wearing the victim’s jacket

A suspected burglar was arrested by police after he was found sleeping in the victim’s house in Heaton.

The victim, who didn’t know the man or how he entered his property, found him sleeping on his couch around 2:15am on Tuesday morning.

The burglar was wearing the victim’s jacket and his laptop and other valuable items had been moved onto the property’s balcony.

The occupant of the property then rang 999. Police officers immediately came to the scene and woke the sleeping man.

Second year Hannah Woodall who lives near where the burglary happened said: “It’s quite common to find someone on my sofa at night. But it’s also worrying that this, serious event, happened near to where I live.

“I guess we had better lock all our doors at night.”

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Officers believe the man had climbed up onto a wall and then onto the balcony of the property and got inside through an unlocked patio door.

The arrest was made during Northumbria Police’s “burglary month”. #BeatTheBurglar is aimed at raising awareness in burglary, catching burglars and helping people keep burglars out of their homes.

Officers across the force will be focusing on burglary during November in a bid to raise awareness of burglary and to try and prevent burglaries from happening.
