Freshers arrested over bomb scare at Newcastle Uni

Police confirm they have arrested two Russian students after a bomb disposal team cleared the building

Two Newcastle freshers have been arrested over last night’s bomb scare at the INTO building.

Police say the two students are Russian 18-year-olds studying at the uni.

And Chief Superintendent Laura Young said a controlled explosion was carried out last night in the building.

Last night she said: “Police have been searching a Newcastle University building and the building has been evacuated as a precaution so that items can be recovered and examined.

“Residents around Newcastle Town Moor may have heard a slight bang and I would like to reassure them this is in connection with the incident at the university and was planned.”

The building and other parts of the university have now reopened after they were closed off last night

In a statement, the University said: “The INTO building is now open for staff and students following last night’s evacuation and we are working closely with Northumbria police with their ongoing inquiries.”
