Newcastle Uni research shows smokers will stop sparking up for cash bribes
Forget the fags, bring on the bribes says Newcastle Uni
They’re everywhere – in front of no smoking signs, outside uni halls in pyjamas, passed out in the corner of the smoking area.
But now Newcastle Uni research has found that the most effective way of getting people to give up the cigs is to bribe them.
Researchers for the NHS carried out sixteen experiments giving dirty little smokers bribes including cash, lottery tickets and vouchers for stubbing out.
The study showed that rewarding avid smokers mean they’re less likely to spark up – and even as little as three quid made a difference.
It’s a scheme that would come in handy for Newcastle students – we have no money, because we spend it all on Marlboros and trebles.
The everyday Tesco value food and hole ridden jumpers are worth it just for that little bit of nicotine (and to look edgy).
So if you’re a rah smoker and need more money to spend at Asos marketplace for silk bomber jackets, your prayers could all be answered.
But now what are you going to do at pres? No more pouting over your cigarette for photos or crafting the perfect rollie for friends.
Some participants were given a mere three pounds to quit, but come on – that’s one treble in Soho thank you very muchly.
Smokers who took part in the schemes were twice as likely to quit than on their own, and let’s face it, us students have no motivation anyway, unless it’s to go out on the toon.
