NUMED Student on the Sex Offenders Register

Student filmed women as they showered

A Newcastle med student who filmed women in the shower has been put on the sex offenders’ register for five years.

Joshua Beverley, 21, used his phone to record women while they washed.

His movie making was only discovered when one of the women noticed the iPhone sticking out of a wash bag while she was showering. She then realised it was recording.

The student recorded the videos between September 2011 and August 2012, using them for sexual gratification.

Paul Clark, for the prosecution, told the court: “The witness was in the shower and she became aware of a wash bag and an Apple iPhone set standing up in the bag and she realised it was recording.

“Interviews were carried out and, in the second interview, the defendant said he hadn’t been totally frank in the first interview.

“It was then he admitted to the recording with his phone.

Beverley’s victims gave statements to be read in the hearing at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court. They expressed their horror at what he had done:

“I now have trouble spending time in the shower as it feels as though I’m getting watched. I also suffer nightmares about being watched in my bedroom.”

“I was left feeling extremely distressed. I feel violated by his behaviour and disgusted anyone would do such a thing.”

Beverly was in his second year when the offences took place. He will not be allowed to continue with his career and possibly faces disciplinary action from the University.

District Judge David Cooper said: “This was a shabby and shameful matter.”
