£8m makeover for Newcastle Station

Newcastle Central Station is due to undergo an £8million renovation.

The view from Durham station may be prettier than ours, but Newcastle Station is about to get a whole lot better.

East Coast – who plan to make the building one of its flagship stops – are set to spend £8million pedestrianising the taxi area and building a new front set, turning the shoddy portico into a snazzy waiting area.

We’re also due to get a shopping centre and the car park will be made more suitable for pedestrians.

The new taxi point will be near the Station Hotel.

Head of the North East Chamber of Commerce Ross Smith has given the plans a thumbs up.“Newcastle Central Station is… a very important element of many people’s first impression of the city,” he said.

“These exciting plans will… give a new lease of life to that area of the city.”

The changes are due to be carried out by April 2014, with work starting in May this year.
