Football club in ‘match fixing’ scandal

Controversy in the BUCS Northern 4B League.

The Uni football club was briefly embroiled in a Serie A-esque match fixing scandal after the result of a key fixture was changed.

What now looks like an accident caused havoc in the club, with players accusing the Uni of changing the scoreline of a must-win game.

The Tab understands that a 4-3 win for the Newcastle 3rd XI against the 2nds was reversed to ensure the 2nds were promoted.

That result was eventually corrected, but a string of emails seen by The Tab shows members of the club feared it was match fixing.

In an email with the subject “the match fixing scandal continues”, one player wrote: “The Uni changed the result without consulting any of us.

“It’s a shit situation that makes us all look bad even though we haven’t been involved or condoned what’s happened.”

However, later messages put this incident down to a “misunderstanding”. There is no suggestion that the final, official result was rigged.

AU Officer Laura Mason told The Tab: “Having looked into this briefly it does appear that an incorrect score was, at first reported to our administrator. However, this was corrected quickly after the BUCS deadline, once the actual scorecard was received to confirm the correct score.”
