Newcastle was crowned Stan Calvert champions for the SIXTH year running on Sunday by 14.5 points. They beat their Poly rivals 78.75- 64.25 to take the Cup home. Though closer than previous years, Poly’s attempt to regain the Trophy was to no avail.
The grand finale of the Cup fully lived up to expectations, with snow, streakers and scraps galore to entertain a near frozen crowd.

The annual Rugby match was far from boring as both teams battled it out over 80 minutes, with Poly ending up restoring some pride with a comfortable 30-14 win.
However, the Cup was won before a kick was even made with Posh holding a 16 point lead. Early in the day, the Rugby League clash was won by Northumbria by 32-16.
After losing the previous year, Poly regained bragging rights, contributing to the Rugger double.

With over twenty-five different sports being contested on the final day, the off field antics bordered on the outrageous as Poly the Parrot and Rory the Lion did battle at the front of the stand.

After an attack usually confined to the Serengeti, Rory ran back towards the Posh fans claiming a proud victory. The fair nature of the fight, however, was thrown into doubt amidst reports that Poly, the Northumbria mascot, was indeed a girl. Rory was unavailable for comment.

Elsewhere, Northumbria’s Women’s Hockey team were able to come back from one down to beat the Posh outfit 4-2. Supporters rushed the field at the end of the game to celebrate with their players. It’s the small things in life that count eh?

An eventful set of football fixtures saw Northumbria come away with 6 points. A thrilling game between the Men’s 1st teams saw Posh snatch a late winner to claim the bragging rights.

Despite Posh skipper, Alex Auld, having to be replaced through injury, Newcastle battled on to secure two precious points.

Another eventful year in the Stan Calvert Cup saw the gap between the two Universities narrow to just 14.5 points, from a whopping 48 point margin last year.

Watch out for the next year’s Memorial cup, as Northumbria will be seeking to push on and reclaim the cup after six years in the wilderness.
