Event organisers fined £10k after crowds of fans met AJ Tracey in Platt Fields Park

‘I didn’t expect that many people to turn up in Manny’

Organisers have been fined £10k for violating Covid rules after AJ Tracey visited his fans in Platt Fields Park yesterday as part of his tour and was met with a sea of people.

Due to the crowds, the event was cancelled before the performance as so many people had turned up.

In a video he posted on social media, Tracey said “I didn’t expect that many people to turn up in Manny”, and thanked fans for coming out.

Tracey posed for photos with his fans, as they chanted lines from his latest album. He signed some CDs and interacted with the crowd.

Tracey said he just “went to sign CDs and leave them in different places around the UK.”

Police officers monitored the crowds and escorted the rapper safely to the basketball court.

Greater Manchester Police has warned “not to flout the lifting of restrictions” as lockdown rules ease.

The fans were excited to meet him. One of them stated, “I love Flu Game so much, I must have listened to it 20 times already. I really hope I can get a picture with him.”

Tracey said he will come back to Manchester, “when it’s safe to do so, I’m definitely gonna come back and do some shows.”

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police say that at around 2.50pm on Sunday, they were called to reports of a large gathering at Platt Fields Park.

They told BBC’s Newsbeat “enquiries established that a music event was being held”, and said the organiser of the gathering was given a Fixed Penalty Notice of £10,000.

Superintendent Caroline Hemingway said: “We are still very much in the midst of a public health crisis and it remains as important as ever to abide by the Covid-19 legislation.”
