University of Manchester now has over 1,000 cases of coronavirus on campus

1,041 students and 20 members of staff have tested positive

There are now over 1,000 cases of coronavirus on Manchester Uni’s campus.

Two more days of data have been added to the Uni’s COVID-19 daily statistics report, taking the total of confirmed coronavirus cases amongst staff and students to 1,061.

The Tab believes Manchester Uni currently has the most coronavirus cases across UK universities and is the first university to have more than 1,000.

Since 21st September, 20 members of UoM staff and 1,041 students have been reported as testing positive for coronavirus.

The University has said it is releasing the Covid daily statistics report as it wants to be “as transparent as possible,” saying its “priority is the safety of staff and students”.

The University said: “The figure we are reporting is the number of new known positive cases among our staff and students, as of the preceding day”. The figures are from students and staff who are both on and off of campus, but UoM’s system does not track where the virus may have been picked up from.

The uni has thanked students and staff for getting tested and letting the University know and “wish all those colleagues and students who may be currently unwell a speedy recovery.”

For students who are self-isolating, UoM have created a Self-isolation guidance page, and have said: “If you are self-isolating, we will do everything we can to support you.”

The University has said “significant safety measures” have been put in place and that the campus remains, “as safe a place as possible to work and study, in line with government guidance”.
