Futuristic plans for the redevelopment of the Toast Rack

Don’t worry, it will still look like a toast rack

The council have approved Generation Ltd’s plans to renovate the iconic Fallowfield building

There will be 200 new flats, 20,000 sq ft gym and leisure area and 7,000 sq ft shopping space. There may also be a cafe and communal working space, perfect for the student community.

There will be a winter garden sheltered by glass and play areas for children. On top this, a rooftop garden and grassy play area.

There will also be up to 170 car parking spaces at the facility.

This is how it looks now

The Toast Rack building is a grade two listed Brutalist building, built in 1960 it has been a fond memory of Manchester students for generations.

The site was sold to Estrela Properties in 2014 for £5m to be renovated. MMU then moved its students to the Birley Fields campus.

The development will be phased over two years and will begin later this year. The gym will be the first instalment.

Co-founder of Generation Ltd Shehzad Chaudhri said: “This scheme was carefully crafted in light of the site’s listed status and we are really looking forward to getting started now it has been given the green light by Manchester City Council.

“We are confident that the local community will be pleased with the development and its positive impact on the surroundings when this comes to fruition. Further details will be released on Generation’s website in due course.

“We saw a fantastic opportunity with The Toast Rack and this bold scheme is just the statement that south Manchester market needs.

“We’ve also examined the economic landscape in the light of the recent Brexit vote and the pent up demand for this type of housing product in the suburbs remains strong.”
