Fallowfield freshers have been fined over £17k already this year
Almost half was from Oak House alone
The University of Manchester has raked in over £17,000 already this year just from pastoral fines on students in accommodation.
Following a freedom of information request, it can be revealed that students living in accommodation across the Fallowfield Campus have been fined £17, 387 already this academic year 2015/16.
Total fines reached £17, 431 for the entire academic year 2014/15, so we are set to hit record breaking figures by the end of this year.
Last year a massive £11,700 worth of the fines came from Owens Park halls, compared to a mere £2,775 in Oak House. This year however Oak House have already racked up an impressive £8412.50 worth of Pastoral fines, compared to only £7470 in OP.
Pastoral Fines | 2014/15 Session | 2015/16 Session to date |
Owens Park | £11,700-00 | £7470-00 |
Oak House | £2775-00 | £8412-50 |
Fallowfield Campus | £17431-57 | £17387-00 |
The majority of the fines are handed out for offences such as smoking in halls, covering smoke detectors and “anti-social behaviour”. This covers a manner of sins including smashing windows, fighting and excessive noise.
George, a first year living in Owens Park, said: “I think the fines are way too steep. I can understand why they’re necessary, but we shouldn’t get charged £100 for a first offence. It’s not fair”.
