Manchester town hall to be lit up in Belgian colours following Brussels attacks

It will be lit up in red, yellow and black for the three-day mourning period

Manchester city council have announced they are going to light up the town hall in the colours of the Belgian flag to respect the victims of the Brussels attacks.

At the moment there are believed to be 34 dead and over 250 seriously injured following the explosions in Brussels. Both the main airport and one of its metro stations were targeted on Tuesday.

The Town Hall will be lit up in black, yellow and red throughout the three-day mourning period as a symbol of unity with Brussels at this devastating time.

A book of condolence has also been opened within the Town Hall which will be available for people to sign as an act of support to those affected by the attacks.

Leader of Manchester city council Richard Leese said: “We continue to share the shock and sadness that spreads across the world when atrocities are committed and hate is let loose.

“Such events are not easily forgotten, not least by those directly affected, but Manchester stands alongside the people of Brussels – and Belgium – united against a common foe of hate and terror. It is important that we refer back to peace at these terrible times.

He added:“Our sympathy and thoughts are with the victims, their families and all those in Brussels.”
