Exec Team election posters defaced with swastika

The banner was facing a church

A candidate running for the Exec Officer elections for the University of Manchester Students Union, has had several campaign posters defaced with Nazi imagery and offensive language.

At the weekend, on of the candidates had a number of banners defaced.

Along with this, many other posters and banners have been torn down, and gone missing.

The graffiti of the swastika appeared this weekend, on a banner hanging outside the Student Union building, which faces a church, the RNCM Catholic Chaplaincy building.

The banner was removed by Union staff on Sunday, with the candidate being unable to find or replace the banner.

Speaking to The Mancunion, the candidate said: “Students have resorted to vandalism and sabotage to express their dissent, which is completely wrong.

“I find it very unsettling that someone would feel it is acceptable to graffiti the Nazi swastika on a candidate’s campaign material.

“Ultimately, it’s an act of vandalism and libellous.”

Second year Sarah was outraged by the vandalism, she told The Tab: “It’s ridiculous that this kind of thing happens in the 21st Century.

“It was probably meant to be a joke but it’s definitely not funny.”

No other candidates’ campaigns have been affected as of yet.
