Lufbra’s WiFi working intermittently after suspected cyber attack

Don’t they know it’s deadline week?

Eduroam, Learn and the Library Catalogue Plus crashed earlier today while students rushed to meet deadlines.

The problems began due to Janet, the publicly funded computer network which also maintains the Portal, being hacked.

The loss of signal has left hapless students struggling to access essay results and submit assessments.

The network issues have caused mass inconvenience across campus, especially with Christmas deadlines looming.

35 network connections across the country have also gone down.

A Library Services spokesperson told The Tab: “We’ve been experiencing problems linked with the nationwide attack.

“Catalog seems to be working now and there is intermittent connection on other sites.

“If any students has a problem we encourage them to ring or call us and we will treat each problem individually to solve it.”

Sam, an Economics Finalist working on his deadline said: “I was in the middle of emailing myself some work and the system crashed.

“I genuinely thought I had lost all my work and that I was going to have to start all over again.

“Luckily, I had saved it onto a memory stick otherwise I would have been screwed”.

The UK provider for the higher education network, Jisc, announced on their Twitter account: “On Monday 7 December at 9.24 a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack caused unplanned disruption on the Janet network.

“This has resulted in a potentially intermittent service for all customers. Our network and computer security incident response teams are currently working to resolve the problem. Customers affected have been contacted and are being provided with up to date information.”
