London is getting the world’s biggest slide this spring

It’s only going to be a fiver a go

Legends at The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park have confirmed plans laid out last summer to install a record-breaking slide into the massive red sculpture in the Olympic Park.

The slide will measure almost 180 m in length, and 76 m in width, and will wrap around the ArcelorMittal Orbit.  It is set for opening in Spring 2016.

The current plan is for the slide to circle around the tower five times, before ending with a vertical 50m run to the ground, at speeds of up to 15mph.

The sporting complex, which hosted the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, had the “Orbit” Tower built to commemorate the two very special occasions in London history.

Turner-prize winning artist Anish Kapoor, renowned worldwide for his transatlantic endeavours in the U.S.A., London, and Paris, is the brains behind this endeavour and has invited Belgian artist Carsten Höller to assist with the design.

The ride will feature transparent sections on the ride, allowing people to marvel at the beauty of London as they gleefully descend towards the base.

Organisers said: “The addition of a slide would be an exciting and alternative way to descend from the viewing platforms, and will give a very different perspective of Britain’s tallest sculpture.”
