SCORE!! KCL v UCL MATCH TO GO AHEAD

London Varsity reincarnated as The Gower-Strand Occupation Rugby Match

| UPDATED

In another twist to the London Varsity controversy, The Tab can reveal a group of alumni working under the pseudonym Burlington Bertie, have organized a replacement for the London Varsity.

Cheekily baptised The Gower-Strand Occupation Rugby Match, Mr Bertie confirmed to The Tab that the annual rugby game against the Strand Poly will take place on the 22nd March at Richmond Athletic Ground and will be independent from all UCLU and KCLSU activities.

Richmond Stadium: The new home of university rivalry

Mr Bertie along with the UCL and KCL Men’s Rugby clubs are hoping that what was initially the last BUCS match of the season, will replicate the atmosphere that London Varsity has previously brought out amongst the traditional rivals.

Burlington told the The Tab, “It was one of the defining moments of my time at university and it would be a shame to deny what I saw as a privilege to other students”

When asked if the UCLU Women’s Rugby Club were also involved, Berlington divulged that “we will obviously be contacting them imminently to see if the want to be involved.”

With “most of the budget being spent on security” both rugby clubs are hoping to avoid the problems of the 2012 London Varsity Match, when outbreaks of violence and pitch invasions marred the event.

UCLU are apparently unaware of the alumni’s plans to hold the match, and Burlington hopes that this will further distance it from the negative image of Varsity that has evolved from previous years.

“The Gower-Strand Occupation match is something really inclusive, we want everyone to feel they can be a part of it.”
