Here’s a second year’s guide to fresher-friendly foodie study spots in Liverpool

From breakfasts and meals to sweet treats, these are the places to go this September

Start September off on the right foot – by knowing the ins and outs of the city centre’s most popular study date food spots and the best student cafes in Liverpool 2024. Being a fresher at university is a hard enough experience, especially when you haven’t constructed your personal arsenal of the hottest places to grab that perfect matcha latte, or a hangover cure in the form of a greasy spoon breakfast.

Taking advice from a certified second year student in Liverpool is a foolproof way to conquer the impending dilemma of finding a quirky enough cafe to post on your Instagram Story, that also has enough plug sockets to accommodate your entire Apple ecosystem while you’re studying. Whatever you’re looking for, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a run down of the best student cafes in Liverpool for 2024 freshers.

Cafe Tabac, Bold Street

Located at the top of Bold Street, Cafe Tabac is the perfect place for breakfasts. Although many students don’t believe in brain fuel before a day of studying, their loaded stacks of pancakes are guaranteed to keep you and your mind satisfied.

There’s no stopping you from also getting your hands on a tasty burger and fries for just over a tenner, and they even offer a delicious sounding vegan option. The walls are covered in collages of iconic photos of Liverpool and local bands and artists – not just The Beatles – so it’s definitely a good one to visit if you love a funky Instagram Story!

Bold Street Coffee, Bold Street

Bold Street Coffee seems like such a quirky brunch spot until you’re queuing outside on a Tuesday morning just to snap up some baked eggs and sourdough – for an absolute bargain of a price, we must admit. Despite its popularity, BSC has never failed me as a fresher. The bacon butty is a classic hangover cure. They offer soft-serve espresso ice cream. It has multiple plug sockets. If that doesn’t sound like the perfect environment to study in, then I don’t know what does. Also, ignoring looming deadlines by going out for food is so in, by the way.

Egg Cafe, Newington

If you’re vegetarian, vegan or gluten free, we might have found you your own equivalent of foodie heaven right on your doorstep. The Egg Cafe offers an iconic vegan roast, which is ideal when all you’re craving is a home cooked meal that features more than one type of vegetable. Sorry freshers, but it’s true.

They offer several breakfast options which don’t disappoint. The comforting food along with the cosy atmosphere makes it a real gem in Liverpool, whether you’re treating your flatmates to a wholesome Sunday afternoon out, or grabbing a bite halfway through your third rewatch of the same lecture from two months ago.

The Bagelry, Nelson Street

This is one of the most famous student friendly cafes for Liverpool 2024 freshers. Now, there’s foodie fame, and then there’s Bagely-level foodie fame. It only takes a couple of weeks in Liverpool to realise that everyone and their dog raves on about The Bagelry – and they have all the reason to carry on. The Bagelry’s two locations across town offer freshly baked loaded bagels, ranging from a pulled pork filling to a vegan bacon stack. There’s something for everyone here, and with respectable student prices and even cooler merchandise and interior design choices, The Bagelry will arguably become a hotspot for you and your friends if you’re ever passing by Chinatown or Duke Street.

Gran Caffe, Lark Lane

Out of all the best student cafes in Liverpool, 2024 freshers need to know about this spot. If you’re new to Liverpool, then Lark Lane most likely sounds like an unfamiliar territory. Second and third years tend to gatekeep this go-to area of town – and for good reason, too. Lark Lane is the place to visit when you’re in the mood for a mature and sophisticated study date, especially if you go on a hot girl walk there and back instead of catching the bus.

Gran Caffe is sweet treat central – yes, we’ve all heard of Lunko and no, we don’t want to wake up at 6am on a Saturday morning just for a pistachio croissant. Instead, Gran Caffe offers a wide range of classic Italian cakes and desserts to indulge in as a reward for planning one singular page of your assignment. The coffee is also incredible, and the understated ambiance of the cafe is ideal when you’re craving a break from the city centre.

The Watering Can, Greenbank Road

For those freshers out there that are slightly worried about relying on the 699 EVERY DAY to get onto campus, have no fear. When you inevitably miss your 9am because you woke up five minutes after the bus allegedly set off, the world is your oyster when it comes to study safe coffee spots. The Watering Can on Greenbank Road offers the most aesthetically pleasing seating areas and even better food and drinks, meaning you can live out your StudyTok fantasies from the comfort of sitting behind your laptop – with a vanilla oat ice latte, most likely.

Fresher friendly spots in Liverpool aren’t hard to come by, and no doubt your first day of lectures will consist of grabbing a takeaway matcha from 92 Degrees coffee on your way, as you get lost somewhere between the Sydney Jones and the Brodie Tower. Embrace it, it’s first year character building.
