How to survive results day
aka the day every student dreads
Just a few days until we all find out if those long days in the SJ paid off, so it’s fair to say we’re all feeling on edge. How are you planning on surviving the day we’re all dreading, but can’t wait for? It can only go one of two ways… so let me give you some tips.
1. Don’t open that email in public
If you’re on the 699, heading home after a long day of lectures, do yourself a favour and refrain from opening that email in public. There is nothing worse than bursting into tears or getting worked up about bad results, especially in public. All those eyes staring at you will just make it worse. Trust me, I know.
2. Have your preferred drink at hand (either to take the edge off or to celebrate)
Once you get home and are in the comfort of your own bedroom, or with your beloved housemates, make sure you have your alcoholic beverage of choice within arm's reach before opening that email. Get ready to start drowning your sorrows and feeling sorry for yourself straight away, or start the pre-drinking for that massive night out nice and early. Bacardi and coke? Echo falls? Tequila orange? Whatever your bev, make sure to put it on your shopping list this week!
3. Make sure to have junk food in your house (a tub of Ben & Jerry’s won’t hurt)
If alcohol doesn’t cheer you up, food will. Ice cream, cookies, chocolate, McDonalds, pizza… whatever your go to comfort food might be, make sure you have it in. Even if you’re perfectly happy with your results, you’re going to have to line that stomach before those quad vods at Faculty.
4. Make sure you have something planned for the evening – something to take your mind off everything
There is nothing worse than sitting there and pondering over your results. You didn’t do as well as you’d hoped, so what? There’s still second semester to pull your average up, but the more you think about those stupid percentages, the worse you’ll feel about them. Make sure to have something planned for that evening. Be it cinema, bowling, night out, or even a night in with housemates. Keep those results orientated thoughts out of your head!!
5. Remember – cry if you want to
Lastly, make sure to actually let it all out. If you’re thrilled with what you got, tell someone (I would recommend your mum, she’ll be dead proud of you!) But if you’re disappointed or even worse, shocked, have a rant. Talk to your friends about it. Call your sister. Just let it all out. If you need to cry, just cry.
Don't forget, being disappointed is just part of being a student. I know you might think getting bad results is going to end your uni career, but that’s definitely not true. There’s always something you can do to bring your average up. So if you are feeling down about your results, go speak to your academic advisor. They will help you decide what’s best.
