The firework display will instead be over the Mersey. The park has long been the usual location for Liverpool’s giant firework display, but this the display will be launched from three barges anchored in the centre of the Mersey, between the Wirral and Pierhead.

Thousands of people are expected to line both banks of the Mersey to watch the 20-minute extravaganza, due to explode into the sky from 6.30pm.

Ellie, a third year communications and media student expressed disappointment at the turn of events: “I’ve never been to Sefton and was hoping to go this year and frankly I’m gutted, but I imagine  the fireworks will be so pretty on the water”.
