In pictures: a far-right group are rallying at St Georges Hall
They are shouting “EDL”
A far-right, racist organisation called North West Infidels are currently gathered by Lime Street.
The rally was due to take place in Manchester, but the venue was changed last night.
Members of the group can be seen holding signs saying ‘refugees not welcome.’
Last night the group posted a message on Facebook which read: “The truth is, we never intended to protest in Manchester on the February 27. In true North West Infidel fashion we have thrown our adversaries a red herring.
“We will be in Liverpool… to exercise our democratic rights to freedom of expression, speech, movement and assembly.”
One police officer has been injured after being hit by a brick and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Earlier today Merseyside Police issued a statement on the event. It said: “Merseyside Police would like to make it clear that while it will facilitate peaceful protest it will not tolerate disorder, criminal or anti-social behaviour during any demonstration.
“Officers will monitor the situation as the safety of the public is our main priority and will work to minimise disruption to residents and businesses.
“Our officers will take robust action against anyone found to have committed an offence, in order to ensure the safety of the public.”
