The Guild’s anonymous listening service Nightline has been launched

The service will be open from 8pm to 8am, seven days a week

Nightline is a confidential listening service that aims to provide support for students and give them the opportunity to call about any issues they may be facing at university, and has finally been launched.

The Nightline operators are trained student volunteers that will be available every night from 8pm to 8am.

The service has been pushed by Deputy President of the Guild Alex Ferguson who pledged to bring in the service when running for student officer nearly two years ago.

He told us,”Student support is really important, and there is something fantastic about it being peer led.

“It means there is less of a barrier to accessing support, and you know 100% that when you ring up its completely confidential and the person at the end of the line understands being a student.”

Nightline volunteers will be available for students to talk to about any problems or issues they are experiencing. Operators will also provide general information such as bus timetables or numbers for taxis, as well as anything to do with student life such as University department numbers.

One anonymous Nightline volunteer said: “I feel that it is a worthwhile and much needed service for the university. I decided to become involved with Nightline as it stuck with me from my experience of first year that there are many different upheavals which university life brings.

“Having the opportunity to be able to speak to someone who will be non-judgmental and anonymous is a comforting and beneficial resource with the aim to help support our student community.”

Another volunteer said: “I think it’s a really important service for some students they may be struggling to find support or are nervous about asking for help.

“It’s completely anonymous so people won’t have to worry about feeling judged or embarrassed.”
