Sugar Skull facepaint tutorial

More scary than sweet

With the sugar skull proving a popular choice for Halloween costumes this year, here’s an easy step by step guide.

As long as you’ve got some black and white clothes you’ve got an instant costume, and a more original take on skull facepaint.

You will need:

  • White facepaint
  • Black facepaint
  • 2 eyeshadows in different shades of the same colour
  • Sponge
  • Makeup/paint brush

Step 1:

Cover your whole face in white.

Step 2:

Next fill in your eye sockets with eyeshadow all the way up to your eyebrows, using a lighter shade on the eyelid and a darker shade to colour the crease upwards, and line under the eye.

Step 3:

Circle the eye-sockets in black face paint, starting above your eyebrows. Then draw semi-circles all the way around the circles and blend the black circles into your eyeshadow.

Step 4:

Add detailing to the forehead. This can be in the form of crosses, dots, spirals, cobwebs, roses, or anything you think looks good.

Step 5:

Draw an upside-down-heart on your nose, with an upside-down triangle underneath your septum.
Next colour in your top lip with the black facepaint (or black lipstick if you already own it, then draw lines from the corners of your moth to the bottom of your ear, adding lines and swirls to halfway along the line as desired.

Step 6:

Draw a cobweb on the chin, and add in swirls, dots and other shapes for more detail.
Use your finger to blend in the black line where your cheekbones are.
