Police have cornered off the Shell garage after a man robbed a cash delivery guard at 11.40am today.

According to eyewitnesses, a white hatchback car was “wheel-spinning” at the scene around the time of the incident on Smithdown road.

It has been said that he stole £10,000 from a cash box.

The police remain at the scene as they continue to gather evidence.

It is thought that the robber approached the forecourt and left in a white car immediately after raiding the money.

The guard involved is not believed to have been injured during the raid.

Second year James, who lives off Smithdown road said: “I love Smithdown usually, it’s so good being near all the students but recently it’s been scary. When I moved here everyone joked that I’d be robbed all the time. This incident today doesn’t help people understand that Liverpool is actually a very friendly and safe place.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious immediately before or afterwards is asked to call Merseyside Police on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
