An “erratic” thug who waved two knives around is thought to have been tasered three times by police.

Officers were called to the property on Gainsborough Road around 9.15am yesterday after reports of “a man armed with two knives acting erratically inside a property”.

On arrival officers say the man, believed to be in his early 20s, was carrying two knives and suffered severe self-inflicted injuries to his neck and arms.

At first the young male barricaded himself in the Smithdown property before climbing out of a rear window and making his way to the garden, where it is believed he was tasered a number of times.

Police confirmed “officers deployed a taser a number of times to safely incapacitate and detain the man”.

The man was seen to by paramedics however no-one else was harmed during the incident.

A large area of the popular road was sealed off while the police dealt with the man.

Eyewitnesses claimed seven police cars were parked in the street during the stand-off which lasted nearly an hour.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “We were called following concerns for the safety of a man armed with a knife in a property. He was injuring himself.

“We attended and he was detained at the property and was taken to hospital.”
