It’s one of the latest fitness crazes to sweep the nation, and now a pole dancing society has launched at the Guild.

Pole dancing lessons, taught by British and International champions, will be held every week – even though the University banned burlesque classes last academic year because of their promiscuous nature.

The Liverpool University Pole Dance Society will officially launch in the Guild dance studio on Friday, with three days of classes a week.

Due to the huge demand, six classes each week will be devoted to beginners.

The society was originally started up in August last year, but struggled to take off due to funding and location.

And after a delay in the delivery of poles to the Guild, the first session, an introductory class, will take place this afternoon in external studios on Victoria Street.

As of Friday though, lessons will go ahead as planned in the dance studio, holding 18 to a class.

Second year Josephine, who has booked a place on the first class this week, says it’ll be a fun way to get fit.

She said: “I don’t do any exercise, like ever. The most I’ll do each day is walking up the stairs to my room because I live up in the conversion.

“It’s something I’ve always been curious about. I’m not sure if i’ll stick with it, but I’m all for giving it a go.”

You are advised to dress casually in joggers or leggings and a vest, and while shoes are optional, baby lotion is banned to prevent dancers from losing control on the pole.

Each class can hold up to 18 students, with three students to every three metre long poll.

The society also boast national and international champion staff: Toni, Misty and Mansell teaching on Wednesday and Friday’s classes.

Students of all abilities are invited to attend the classes, but there will be an intermediate/ advanced class after the beginners class this Friday.
