Liverpool remains an unemployment capital
Over a quarter of households have no-one in work
The city of Liverpool is one of the top five most jobless areas in the UK.
New official figures show that work-less households remain a huge problem for the city.
This is Liverpool’s tenth consecutive year in the dreaded top five.
Nottingham tops the list, with Glasgow, East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire mainland and Wolverhampton making up the rest.
With graduate employment constantly at the back of everyone’s mind, this news is sure to give Liverpool’s students something to think about when they plot their next move once graduated.
The ONS, who conducted the research, claims there is a clear link between unemployment and areas that were once heavily industrialised.
On Liverpool, they said: “Liverpool had a large manufacturing base and one of the UK’s largest docks, which have both been in decline since the 1970’s.”
The ONS’s research includes adult and student households, however the exclusion of students from the Liverpool stats has no impact on the city’s position in the table.
At least we’re all in it together.
