Student diagnosed with suspected case of bacterial meningitis

It is not yet confirmed whether or not they have the life threatening disease

A student has been taken ill with a suspected case of meningitis B.

It is yet to be confirmed whether or not the unknown student has the fatal disease, but precautions are being taken.

Those in immediate contact with the student have been given preventive antibiotics to halt the spread.

The University have issued a statement saying there is no need for anybody else to have precautionary medication.

An email was sent around this evening, which said: “The University is issuing guidance from Public Health England after an undergraduate student was taken ill with suspected meningococcal disease (meningitis B).

“Meningitis/septicaemia due to meningococcal infection is a rare illness.

“Even where the diagnosis is confirmed, it is very unusual to see a second case.

“The student’s immediate contacts have been given an antibiotic to help prevent further spread.

“There is no need for any other student in our university to have antibiotics.

“PHE has advised the University that there is no cause for concern for the wider University community and that it is safe for staff and students to continue to attend the University as normal.”
