The University of Liverpool overcame arch-rivals John Moores yesterday afternoon to be crowned 2014 Varsity champions.

In the event’s first year of being promoted with real purpose, the finest sportsmen and women of Liverpool’s two principal Universities clashed in competition for ultimate bragging rights.

After weeks of anticipation, it was of course UoL who came out on top, winning the cup with an overall score of 60 to JMU’s 48 points.

The UoL swimming teams gave the eventual winners an early lead heading into Wednesday’s fixtures, after a resounding success on Tuesday evening. The mixed handball team were less fortunate, suffering a 24-14 defeat.

The first results on Wednesday wins for the women’s volleyball and hockey, whilst the UoL men’s badminton side secured another three points – a great start to the day.

Meanwhile, the football fixtures saw a continued dominance for the hosts, with both the men’s and women’s first teams earning further wins for UoL. The women’s tennis side were also triumphant.

Our women’s football first team recorded a 3-1 victory.

The men’s hockey side were confident before their match, taunting JMU on Twitter, but this self-assurance paid its dividends as they smashed their opposition with a final 7-2 scoreline.

UoL’s chances of success were boosted by wins in the women’s rugby union, men’s basketball, women’s netball 2nds and the women’s lacrosse team.

The day culminated in the rugby union varsity match at 15:30 and, playing in front of an attendance of around 450 people, the two sides failed to disappoint.

The attendance was slightly overestimated pre-match. It was a brilliant atmosphere nonetheless.

With the advantage of fantastic home support, the UoL lads showed tremendous fight, coming from behind to record a well-earned victory.

The team were quick to begin the celebrations, as I’m sure were the rest of the day’s winners.

Thanks to an excellent showing from a number of the home side’s teams, now the University of Liverpool can (and will) whole-heartedly support the claim of being the city’s finest sporting student body.

A massive congratulations to everyone who took part!
