Big brain in the rain: UoL form largest human brain

It’s official, people in Liverpool have the largest brain

Students and staff at the University of Liverpool alike united last week to produce the world’s largest human image of a brain – or in fact any organ, anywhere (that’s not what she said).

University Square was host to the record breaking attempt and the whole area was cordoned off for several hours during Thursday.

The event was coordinated by Professor Tom Solomon of the university’s Institute of Infection and  Global Health in aid of the inaugural World Encephalitis Day. The condition is part of his ongoing research.

Encephalitis is a disease which affects the brain and can cause serious damage. It is an inflammation of the brain tissue and can cause headaches, nausea and even seizures and hallucinations. It can strike people of any age.

687 people turned out for the event, a world record

A grand total of 687 people turned out in force for the event, all wearing brightly coloured plastic overalls to highlight the various regions of the brain and the ensuing effect that the disease has.
