The University and College Union (UCU) has published a list of the nation’s most cash-stacked uni leaders as staff arrange more strikes and walk-outs in fights over pay.

Here’s the low down on salary rises between 11/12 and 13/14:

University of Liverpool Sir Howard Newby £328k – £360k 9.8%

Liverpool JMU Prof. Nigel Weatherill £187k – £221k 18.2%

Edge Hill University Dr John Cater £239k – £270k 13.0%

Liverpool Hope University Prof. Gerald Pillay £228k – £232k 1.8%

And the JMU Vice Chancellor’s pay cheque has risen by 34k which is more than some Liverpool staff’s annual salary.

A University of Liverpool spokeswoman said:

“Vice-chancellors’ remuneration packages reflect what it takes to attract, retain and reward individuals of sufficient calibre, experience and talent in an increasingly competitive sector.”

However UCU official Martyn Moss slammed the rises saying:

“Far too many vice-chancellors are happy to line their own pockets while driving down staff pay.”

The pay rises are said to reflect “exceptional expertise” with a spokeswoman for Edge Hill claiming that, due to Dr. Cater’s leadership, the university had risen up national league tables by over forty places.

University staff refused to accept a 1% pay offer, as the unions claimed that accepting it would be acknowledging a real terms 13% pay cut since 2009 – and this has prompted the current pay dispute.

Mr Featherstone-Witty, one of the people behind the founding of LIPA, said: “Staff know that my annual salary increase and those of all others who are on spot salaries match theirs exactly. No more, no less.”
