Arctic Monkeys: R U Mine? Because I Wanna be Yours

Alex O’Brien reviews the Arctic Monkeys’ storming set at the Echo Arena.

With arguably the most anticipated album of the year, I had high expectations, and was not disappointed! Supported by The Strypes, Arctic Monkeys provided Liverpool’s Echo Arena with a sell-out show like no other.

The Strypes, a four-piece Irish band from Cavan started the show, and although they were good, they are perhaps too unknown for the huge crowd in the Echo Arena. Their performance lacked the needed atmosphere, and seemed to drag on. We all just wanted Alex.

The Arctic Monkey’s set started just after 9, opening with Do I Wanna Know? and provided an amazing experience for the 12,000 people there. Although most of the songs were from the new album AM, there was a great mix from all five of their albums, including I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, Brianstorm, Crying Lightening, Don’t Sit Down ‘cos I’ve Moved Your Chair, and an acoustic version of Mardy Bum.

Undoubtedly the most memorable moment was their tribute to the late, great Lou Reed, with a cover of Walk On the Wild Side. With the whole crowd singing along, the atmosphere was incredible, and a beautiful send off to the rock pioneer.

The whole night was unforgettable, and has left me with gig blues worse than fresher’s flu and a med hangover.
