Win Tickets to the Voodoo Ball

If you’re looking for something a bit more exciting than Concert Square this Halloween, next Saturday’s Voodoo Ball is for you, and we’re offering plus-one guestlist entry for one lucky reader

The Tab caught up with organiser and DJ Carnivalesque, who describes the event as “Celebrating the traditional roots of rebellionism, fighting against repression and having a crazy party at the same time”. Taking place at The Kazimier on Saturday 26th October, it’s set to be a good one.

As well as New Orleans Mardi Gras and Voodoo traditions, the event is also inspired by “Slave roots in the Caribbean and Brazil, how they subverted Catholicism and still worshiped their own gods, and fought the oppression of their slave masters. We kind of took that as a loose basis and had some fun with it.”

This cacophony of exotic influences is sure to be reflected on Saturday night. We’re promised brass, afrobeat and lavish fancy dress, a ‘fresh approach’ to the commercialisation of Halloween, and most importantly, “lots of surprises”. The night will also feature a ‘funeral march’ through the streets of Liverpool, headed by a zombie marching band from Bold Street at 8:30.

Over 17 acts are already confirmed, and Carnivalesque was hard pressed to pick just one favourite. Honourable mentions must go to Inc. A (“just crazy”), but undoubtedly the star booking is Brazil’s very own Orquestra Contemporânea de Olinda, for whom The Voodoo Ball will be one of only three UK gigs.
