Liverpool Uni student Fiona Hartley has taken a work placement with Keysi NorthWest, a Liverpool based self-defence Academy. Part of her job has been to give fellow students the opportunity to develop skills to protect themselves, in her capacity as Keysi Ambassador.

“Joining Keysi was a leap into the unknown, but it has made me realise that your comfort zone can be as large or small as you choose to make it”, explained Fiona.

Keysi, a Spanish martial art, used in the Hollywood films Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, focuses on harnessing and improving the body’s natural instincts to protect itself. Fiona explains,

“Everyone is born with these basic instincts, so with a little help from Keysi everyone can improve their natural capacity to defend themselves under the pressure of a real attack”.

“I have always believed that you should take responsibility for yourself and that becoming a victim is not an option. I have learned that the most important part of self-defence is the emotional aspect, and once you have developed this, along with good body mechanics, anyone can improve their ability to defend themselves.”

“There are many benefits to Keysi, it’s a great de-stresser and keeps you fit, allowing you to look and feel better with yourself. It’s also amazing fun and a great way to meet people.”

It’s also a great way to defeat the Joker, if Hollywood is to be believed. If you want to clear the city of criminals in an act of revenge for the murder of your parents, Keysi might just be for you.

Training runs every week at the Keysi Academy on Hope Street. For more details, click here.
