Monday marked the 24th Anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster – an event that claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.

The City of Liverpool came together to remember the friends and family; the men, women and children who lost their lives as a result of this tragedy.

Tributes to these supporters were paid during a memorial service, held at Anfield Football Stadium. This service was, of course, the first since an independent report cleared Liverpool fans of wrongdoing.

Great strides have been taken towards the truth of what happened that day and in its aftermath finally coming out, and a hearing will be held in London later this month to decide the parameters for new inquests.

Families of the Liverpool fans who died will be joined by players past and present and thousands of supporters for a memorial service at Anfield, while Everton and Manchester United were among the rival clubs adding their own tributes.

The heartbreak is being met by huge respect, even from Liverpool’s Premier League opponents.

Support also came from across the country on Twitter. #JFT96 and #YNWA had been trending across the United Kingdom. It’s safe to say the Hillsborough anniversary is being met with respect.
