Spotlight: The Loose Hearts

The Tab catches up with new kids on the block, The Loose Hearts

The Loose Hearts

In recent times the Liverpool music scene has been absolutely booming, whether it’s the huge success of club nights such as Abandoned Silence, Pause and Polka, or the wide exhibition of thriving new bands blasting to the forefront of many music lovers attention. One band which The Tab believe exemplifies this surge, catching our eye along with many is new indie/alternative outfit, The Loose Hearts.

The indie four-piece, made up of lead singer Luke Papini, lead guitarist Chris Mitchell, bassist Ciaran Stewart and drummer Joshua Hill, first met in freshers 2011. They were brought together through the UoL music course, but it was not until Chris perked up about starting a band that the wheels were set in motion for the formation of The Loose Hearts. Chris quickly recruited his bassist and drummer but it was not until Luke Papini was scouted while singing in the music school that The Loose Hearts was finally created.

The Loose Hearts have enjoyed recent success, gigging around at notorious Liverpool venues such as The Kazimier as well as playing the recently launched The Looking Glass Presents. Although, their most notable venture to date has been the recording and promotion of their first album, entitled How We Are Now’, which came out on the 31st of December, featuring highlight tracks ‘Rita’ and ‘Boys ‘round Midnight’.

The Tab caught up with the boys from The Loose Hearts and this is what they had to say.

How it was putting the album together?

Yeah it was brilliant. Basically we came up with songs throughout 1st year and 2nd year then we found this nice little recording studio in Liverpool and recorded all our stuff there. Stressful at times but it was worth it.

Plans in the near future?

Well we’re currently recording at the moment with a view to release a free single on March 25 and we’ve got a big gig coming up in London too at the Hope and Anchor so we’re gonna showcase our new stuff there. Next year we’re hoping to release a second album and just try and get us on the radar and get our name out there.

Where do you get your ideas and inspirations from?

From life experiences I think. We had a crazy year last year in terms of relationships and health so we take from what’s around us basically. We all like to listen to old music as well. Stuff like Springsteen, The Beatles, The Who and a bit of the Libertines, like modern indie stuff I suppose.

How has your live performances been going so far?

Yeah they’ve been going alright really. We’ve been playing around quite a lot of places. Playing a lot around London in the Camden scene and in Liverpool we’ve done most of the venues. Everything’s been going pretty cool really.

Long term plans?

Well two of us go to uni and the other two are working here so we’re all going to live together next year. I guess the only plan is to keep recording, keep gigging, and keep putting our name out there. Just do what ya gotta do really.

You can next catch The Loose Hearts on March 14 at Zanzibar. Updates can be found on their Twitter and Facebook.
