SRO candidates reckon sexism is not an issue to be addressed by males.

Four male SRO candidates, including current President Sam Butler and Deputy President Tom Bee, were reluctant to address the issue of sexism on campus during yesterday’s LGoS Question Time.

When asked how they would address the issue of sexism if elected to the board, Sam Butler stated it would be “inappropriate” for him to comment on the issue, suggesting he thinks men are not best-placed to tackle the issue.

The candidates mostly agreed sexism is an issue that needs to be dealt with… but mainly by females.

Andrew Wills, a LGBT activist, Tom Bee and Peter Murden all echoed Sam’s statement, brushing off the issue as one to be dealt with by female candidates.

Support for their response was then given by current Vice President Maggie Hayes, who is also standing for re-election.

Maggie Hayes drew attention to the new Feminist society, as well as saying how proud she was for tackling Carnage’s ‘Pimps and Hoes’ theme back in October.

Meanwhile, SRO candidate James Coe claimed “sexism is rife on campus”, with several other candidates agreeing.

Victoria Lee even went as far to say she would like to see all male and all female “safe zones”, similar to the ones found in Japan.

Hasan Abassi disagreed, however.  He said not a lot of people are sexist, and to tackle sexism so harshly would be “representing a minority”.
