Liverpool’s notorious Chinatown, home to the largest Chinese arch outside of China, welcomed hundreds of people into its quarter to bring in the New Year.

This weekend has seen a huge celebration of Chinese culture with a great variety of events, from Tai Chi demonstrations to a surprise flash mob in Great George Street.

Chinese New Year is one of the biggest events in Liverpool.  Unsurprising, considering the city is home to the largest Chinese Community in Europe.

Paul Yap, final year Law student, was one of hundreds who joined in the celebrations.  He particularly liked the firecracker display, telling The Tab:

“The firecracker means to get rid of old bad stuff and welcome the new year.  So the louder the firecracker is, you will have more luck for the coming year.”
