Polka. Q&A

The Tab meets the minds behind the newest addition to Liverpool’s electronic music scene, ‘Polka.’

| UPDATED

With its launch scheduled for the 25th January 2013, just days after the exam period comes to an end, the stage is set for Polka. to take the Liverpool electronic music scene by storm. The Tab met up with its founders for a quick Q&A session to get the low-down on their hotly anticipated new venture.

Q: Alright guys, how’s it going? First things first, what is Polka.?
A: “Polka is a brand new Liverpool based night, run by Liverpool University students, Linnie Ncube, Orlando Lloyd, Jake Greenwood and Johnny Grant. At our events you should expect to hear House, Disco and Techno. Our general ethos is to showcase up and coming acts in intimate and unique settings. We want it to become a collective of like-minded individuals including DJs, promoters and music enthusiasts.”

Q: Why have you set it up?
A: “We just want to throw a good party, something new and different run by students who know what students want. Liverpool is home to nights like Freeze, mUmU and Circus that consistently bring top quality acts to the city but a lot of students are unaware and/or consider these nights to be too expensive on the whole. What we hope is to provide an event that finds a good balance between price and experience for Liverpool’s populace.

We also felt that there was a lack of artists in Liverpool that we really wanted to see. Larger promotion cities such as London, Manchester and Leeds consistently make big bookings from the genres of music we hope to exhibit and felt it was about time Liverpool got a piece of the pie, not just for us but for the city as a whole. We favor acts that will be up and coming so as to bring competitively new sounds to Liverpool; it’ll broaden our perspectives on what people like and don’t like, whilst maintaining our personality of an intimate setting. Bigger club nights appreciate bigger names, so it speaks for itself that a small night should appreciate the smaller names. We hope to produce a night the artist will remember as well as the audience.”

Q: And finally, what are your expectations/aims?
A: “We have no expectations and our only aim right now is to throw an unforgettable launch party and if all goes to plan we’ll throw another. If people enjoy themselves, why put an end to that. As we currently have a lot of ideas that we’d love to see in action, we hope to see a little success so we can put the plans in motion. Predominantly, though, it’s important to us that no two parties are the same as we don’t want Polka. to become just another night.”

Williamson Tunnels, Smithdown Lane, Liverpool

So there you have it, all you need to know about Liverpool’s newest club night. It’s been confirmed that Polka. will launch on Friday 25th January at Williamson Tunnels; an intimate space, located on Smithdown Lane, it has a history that dates back to the 19th century. If the date isn’t noted in your diaries already, do it now, its going to be big.

A big thank you goes out to Linnie, Orlando, Jake and Johnny for giving their time to talk to The Tab and they hope to see you there!
