Maximo Park choose to kick start their tour in Liverpool 02Academy with no regrets

So the support band weren’t great: they were French, techno and frankly, a bit too all over the place. But that was before Maximo Park came on.

The songs from the new album sounded good, but the general impression was that most people didn’t know the new songs.

When the older, more classic Maximo stuff came on however, it was absolutely brilliant.

Songs such as ‘Books From Boxes’, ‘Apply Some Pressure’ and in the encore, ‘Our Velocity’ went down a treat, with the whole crowd joining in.

The event was a sell out and although most of the crowd were more mature than many of those that generally attend rock gigs, the atmosphere was nothing but feel-good.

It was also a Support the Supports, which meant that before 8 o’clock pints were only £2….quite different to normal drink prices at this venue!

If you didn’t know the band, the night would admittedly have been wasted. But those of us that knew all the words, well, we loved it.

And to top it off, Paul Young (the lead singer) was wearing his hat. That was the icing on the cake.
