Five things Lincoln students can do this Galentine’s Day

Boozy pottery, drag shows and picnics

For years, February has been a month dreaded by single people. The month of awkwardly admitting to your parents that yes, you will be free on the 14th; of purchasing heart-shaped chocolate, only to eat it alone in your room watching 27 Dresses for the hundredth time. It’s a month of furious swiping on Tinder and meeting up in Spoons.

The phenomenon of Galentine’s Day is a recent tradition to grace itself in the UK. Traditionally celebrated on the 13th of February every year, although literally no one is stopping you from celebrating it on Valentine’s Day, this is a celebration of friendship rather than romance which anyone can participate in. And so, we thought it’d be nice to help you plan a date for you and your besties with some of our fave spots in Lincoln.

Take a trip to The Little Pottery Studio

Before you turn your nose up at this slightly tame idea, just know you can bring your own alcohol. The Little Pottery Studio is located near Toby Carvery in the St Marks shopping centre and offers a range of classes. If you fancy attending a session with your besties, they hold their ‘adult late night pottery painting’ every Thursday, where you and your mates can bring your own booze and have a laugh while you attempt something vaguely artistic for the first time in years (maybe this is more ideal for your more creative friends, but it’ll be more of a laugh if you’re all shit).

Attend Scene’s Valentine’s Day events

This may sound counter-intuitive, but hear me out – if you’re going to go anywhere on Valentine’s Day, Scene has to be the one. They have a selection of events, including their show Valentine’s a Drag on Friday 11th February as well as a traffic light party on the 14th. And you and I both know that a traffic light party was not invented with stable, happy couples in mind. So grab your mates, get your green gladrags on and make some questionable choices – your future bae might just be found there.

Settle in at one of Everyman’s Palentine’s viewings

If pottery painting and drag bonanzas aren’t your thing, why not make a mates date for the movies? Everyman in the Cornhill Quarter is helping us all celebrate the love we have for our friends. If you’re in need of a comedy to help laugh away the pain of eternal singleness, Superbad will be showing on Friday 11th of February. Or if you and your friends are in want of a little eye candy, Magic Mike will be showing on Saturday the 12th of February. Both movies are great, and with a cosy scene like Everyman to watch them in, it’s a hard offer to refuse.

Go on a tour of Lincoln’s thrift stores

This one’s for the indie girls who want to do something this Galentine’s Day. Luckily in Lincoln, we’re spoilt for choice, with shops like Rock Retro, Yak and Fab Vintage all supplying a wide range of cool clothes to pick from. Or, if you and your mates want to really search for your next best thrift, there are an abundance of charity shops along the Highstreet for you to look in. Taking it one step further, why not try assigning yourselves the challenge of curating the best thrifted looks for one another?

Head outside for a picnic date

Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but all of this bright sunshine makes me want to head outside after months of sitting in. This is possibly the cheapest idea you can try, and should the weather fail you, you can always host your Galentine’s picnic in your kitchen. The picnic can be as simple or as outrageous as you like, just grab a few meal deals from Tesco (or purchase a selection of pasta pots from M&S if you’re feeling like treating yourselves) and head out to one of the many parks and greens in Lincoln.
