University to take over retail units below The Junxion

Some of the shop units beneath Lincoln student accommodation complex The Junxion have been empty for years now, and shoppers have stayed away from that stretch of St Mark’s Street.

But students now look set to populate the area, because the units, which used to house homewares outlet Raspberry Village and photographers Venture Photography, are being taken over by the University of Lincoln.

According to a report by The Lincolnite, the uni will begin construction imminently, using the space to create two lecture rooms, three seminar rooms, and two “learning lounges”.

The University of Lincoln told the Tab that it was not yet clear which departments would benefit from the new space, but that the development was part of “work to provide further new and improved facilities for 2014/15 across the campus, including teaching and learning spaces and working environments”.

Updates will be posted on the University’s “Learning Landscapes” blog as their summer works programme continues.

The Tab contacted Mezzino, owners of The Junxion student accommodation, but they declined to comment on whether students would face disruption because of the building works, their opinions on the University’s acquisition, or whether rents would be raised since the uni would be moving closer to its residents.
