We asked people why they hate DMU

‘It’s just natural’

We’re told to hate De Montfort from day one, no one knows why.

It’s fair to say that opinion is somewhat split with some hating on DMU, whilst others don’t really care.

Josh, second year, International Relations & History

“I don’t think it’s that we ‘hate’ DMU, it’s just a natural, healthy rivalry between two Uni’s close together that allows competition to flourish. And if we didn’t promote the culture of ‘disliking’ each other, Varsity between the two Uni’s wouldn’t have the same atmosphere which is a huge part of the sporting calendar.”

Ilja, second year, History & Politics

“I don’t hate them, it’s just banter at the end of the day and it’s obviously fun to watch and take part in. Don’t get me wrong, it is great to beat them in sports and it’s amazing to see how big varsity gets. To be honest it would be very dull without them.”

Hajira, second year, History & Politics

“I don’t mind them. Not like I’ve had any bad experiences with a DMU student”

 Becci, second year, International Relations

“I think that it’s just natural to have rivalry between two unis in a city – especially when ours is so much better than theirs.”

 Maggie, fourth year, Criminology

 “Who are DMU?”

 Sarah, second year, Biochemistry

“I categorically don’t understand. Just a bit of ego boosting I guess, we’re not even a top 20 Uni.”

Alex, second year, Management & Politics

“‘From the people I’ve met they seem pretty nice, so I don’t know.”

 Ellie, second year, American studies

“Last year, on Halloween bar crawl, DMU students barricaded the door of Fat Cat’s so Leicester students couldn’t get out…But they’re alright. Can’t really give them a hard time, my mate went to DMU and said they design clogs and shit.”

Liv, second year, History

“There’s a whole stigma around it – but the people I’ve met have been really nice.”
