Campaigner Saavedra to visit Leicester on Monday

HOPE not hate have organised a talk held by influential US activist Carlos Saavedra.

Political campaigner Carlos Saavedra will be visiting University of Leicester next Monday.

Saavedra, 26, has been dubbed by The Huffington Post as “[the individual whose] movement almost single-handedly changed the direction of the Obama administration’s immigration policy.”

It was in his job as Field Co-ordinator of United We Dream, an influential immigrant rights group in the US where Saavedra rose to prominence.

He was partly responsible Obama receiving 71% of the Latino vote after Obama signed the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, also known as the DREAM Act. Saavedra has lived in the US since he was 12 but only recently acquired a passport.

The University of Leicester Engagement Officer, Sean Kelly-Walsh, told The Tab: “It is really exciting to have such a high profile speaker coming to our Students Union this Monday.”

“We always hear that young people don’t vote or campaign on important issues. Yet here we have a young guy who is credited with revolutionising Obama’s immigration policy, practically single handed. This is a great opportunity for students to hear his inspiring story as well as take away valuable lessons.”

The campaigner and activist is coming to Leicester to tell his story to others who share his passion for working with communities and all students at the university are invited to attend the event which is being organised by HOPE not hate.
