Hoo-Rah: 10 percent of Leicester students are privately educated

Students at the University of Leicester are less ‘rah’ than you might think.

One-tenth of students that attend the University of Leicester were educated privately.

During the period studied by the Sutton Trust 5,490 young students arrived at Leicester. Of those students, 565 were educated privately at independent schools, equating to 10.3%.

Leicester’s intake of privately educated students was lower than other universities in the Midlands. The University of Nottingham and the University of Birmingham took 32.4% and 21.8% of their students from private schools respectively.

Leicester’s second university, De Montfort, took in over 9,000 students during the same period, but only 3.2% were from independent schools according to the research conducted between 2005 and 2007.

Whilst Leicester does have a large proportion of students from Greater London and the South-East, it does not have the same ‘rah’ atmosphere that many other universities have, probably due to the lower percentage of privately educated students.
