Varsity 2013: Live!

Keeping you up to minute (almost) with all this years Varsity action.

| UPDATED

Wednesday 20th

Remember we will have twitter updates from the Rugby for those who can’t make it tonight so follow @TheTabLeicester

18.18 – Mens Hockey 1’s

Final score in the Mens Hockey was 6-0 to Leicester, confusion during the game but the Umpires decide that DMU’s goal would not count leaving Leicester to streak to victory.

16.54 – Mens Hockey 1’s

The current score is 3-1 to Leicester, updates have been sporadic so we will try and ensure you get as much info as possible!

16.53 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

Final Score: UoL 11-1 DMU. Congratulations girls. You smashed the Poly!

16.25 – Football, Mens 2nd’s

Unfortunately despite a heroic effort from all members of the team, Leicester were unable to win on penalties. Having missed two of their spot kicks their fate was sealed when DMU netted their fourth, to seal victory. Final score, DMU 2-2 UoL (DMU win 4-2 on penalties).

16.10 – Football, Mens 2nd’s

Leicester have equalised. With almost no time left on the clock Leicester score to take the match to penalties. Things are going to get very tense.

15.52 – Football, Mens 4th’s and 2nd’s

Full time in the 4th team match and DMU have edged to victory in a 4-3 thriller with numerous chances for both teams. A valiant effort from the 4th team.

The 2nd’s have conceded at the start of extra-time. DMU now lead 2-1. Leicester now need to switch back on and try to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat!

15.50 – Ultimate Frisbee

We can also reveal that Leicester’s Ultimate Frisbee team have demolished DMU 14-3 in their match over on Mandela Park. Absolutely brilliant performance from you guys, well done!

15.48 – Football, Mens 4’s, 3’s and 2’s

Leicester’s 4th team have pulled another one back but I fear the clock may be against them as the match slowly dies down.

The 3rd team have secured victory with a very good 4-0 score line, top performance from them.

The 2nd team have moved into extra time, with neither side being able to force a winner in the standard 90 minutes. Come on boys, bring in another win.

15.44 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

You know we said the score was getting silly earlier? It has now hit double figures, Lucy Horn and Harriet Price, who has had an absolute blinder have both scored again to show DMU who the dominant force are.

Something tells me the chants of DMWhooooo? will be out in full force this evening, and indeed after the game…and probably during the Mens match, which will follow shortly.

15.42 – Mens Rugby 2’s – FULL TIME

Leicester have secured victory over DMU’s Rugby 2’s in emphatic fashion, the final score 32-3. Excellent performance from the 2’nd team, I’m sure they’ll be egging the 1st team on later at Welford Road.

15.40 – Football, Mens 2’s

A similar situation to the 4th team, DMU manage to capitalise on an opportunity and equalise the match. UoL 1-1 DMU. Come on boys!

15.39 – Football, Mens 4’s

DMU have snatched a goal, completely against the run of play to take the score to 4-2.

We can now bring you the results of the Netball matches that were played over the course of the last couple of days.

Netball Development: The development team were unfortunately defeated by DMU, the final score DMU 29-10 UoL.

Netball 3’s: The Third team were able to pull out a very impressive performance last night and undoubtedly had some part in what was come. They won their match 28-18. Well done girls.

Netball 2’s: They would not, unfortunately follow in the footsteps of the 3rd team. They were defeated in a very close match 33-30.

Netball 1’s: In another fairly close match the 1st team were able to pull away from DMU in the end and finish strongly. The match finished 39-33 in Leicester’s favour.

Well done to everyone who took part! Go Team Leicester.

15.29 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

Leicester move 7 goals clear thanks to a Sophie Simmonds goal. UoL 8-1 DMU.

15.28 – Squash 2nd’s

News just in that the Squash 2nd team have lost their Varsity 3-1. Good effort guys, I’m sure next year will bring better luck! The 1’s are about to start now.

15.27 – Mens Rugby 2’s

Its been a while since we heard anything but we can confirm that Simon Hislop has scored a try and Will Wilford placed his kick between the posts for the maximum 7 points. UoL 32-3 DMU.

15.23 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

Harriet Price scores her fourth goal of the day to take Leicester 6 goals ahead of DMU. 7-1 is the score. Woman of the Match performance for sure!

15.08 – Mens Rugby 2’s

Ed Godfrey is attempting to copy Harriet Price it seems, he’s just scored his second try of todays match. No conversion to match the try so the score ticks over to UoL 25-3 DMU. Its becoming a bit of a rout.

15.06 – Football, Mens 2’s

Leicester’s 2nd’s open the scoring in this one with a goal on the hour mark. UoL 1-0 DMU.

15.01 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

Things seem to be getting a little bit silly down at the Hockey. In a flurry of updates the score has now reached 6-1 to Leicester with Horn scoring one of those goals, from what we have been hearing she deserves that goal. DMU managed to sneak one in amongst all of that but Leicester are not going to let this one get away from them.

Maybe the milk that they poured over themselves has something to do with their performance…there’s no point crying over the spilt milk though…

14.58 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

Harriet Price earns a place in the record books as she completes her Varsity Day hat-trick. The score moves up to 4-0.

14.55 – Football, Mens 3’s

Leicester strike almost immediately after the restart to secure a 3 goal buffer. UoL 3-0 DMU.

14.53 – Football, HALF TIME

Half time at the football and the scores are as follows:

2nd’s: DMU 0-0 UoL

3rd’s DMU 0-2 UoL

4th’s DMU 3-2 UoL

14.52 – Football, Mens 4’s

Leicester have reduced the deficit again, with the last kick of the half. The score stands at 3-2 going into the second period. Surely they can dig deep and find a way to secure victory. This is sure to be a goalfest!

14.50 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

Updates are coming in thick and fast now. Leicester have scored again, Beth Upton with the goal this time. Price and Horn appear to be running the game at the moment with Leicester rampant down the right hand side of the pitch.

14.47 – Women’s Hockey 1’s

Twenty minutes gone in this one and Leicester have secured a lead of 2 goals to 0. Both coming in very quick succession, it seems they are asserting their dominance. The first, scored by Harriet Price came from open play. Leicester’s second, also scored by Harriet Price came from a short corner, highlighting Leicester’s superiority.

14.45 – Football, Mens 4’s

DMU strike back almost instantly to wipe out Leicester’s goal. The deficit is returned to two goals. DMU 3-1 UoL.

14.44 – Football, Mens 4’s

Leicester score a vital goal before half time, this could be the lifeline that they are looking for. Nathan Ifill with the goal. DMU 2-1 UoL.

14.40 – Mens Rugby 2’s

Will Wilford secures Leicester a 20-3 lead going into half time. A truly brilliant effort from the Mens Rugby team there showing their dominance and ensuring they show DMU who’s boss.

14.36 – Womens Hockey 1’s

Update number one from pitch-side at St. Margaret’s Pastures puts the scores in this one at 0-0 after 10 minutes.

14.34 – Football, Mens 4’s

DMU have penetrated the Leicester defence again and forced their superiority, scoring with half an hour gone. DMU 2-0 UoL.

14.31 – Mens Rugby 2’s

Leicester seem to be surging past DMU far too easily and capitalising on good positions. They are by far the more dominant side at the moment and have increased their lead to 17-3 thanks to a try from George Orton.

14.29 – Football, Mens 3’s

Leicester have struck again, with a third of the game gone Leicester are sitting comfortably at 2-0 at the moment. Very important that they don’t lose concentration, things could easily change.

14.26 – Mens Rugby 2’s

Leicester have pushed on and scored another try, Aaron Dimmick with the points this time. The conversion was put just wide of the posts by Will Willford. The score stands at UoL 12-3 DMU.

14.18 – Mens Rugby 2’s

A very quick response from the Leicester boys, Ed Godfrey scoring Leicester’s first try of the day. The conversion was kicked safely between the posts by Will Wilford to secure the lead for Leicester. UoL 7-3 DMU. Maybe they heard me spur them on?

14.15 – Football, Mens 3’s

News from the third team match is that Leicester have taken a 1-0 lead, 15 minutes gone in that one!

14.14 – Mens Rugby 2’s

Our first update from the rugby is also not a good one. DMU have taken the lead, in the early proceedings, from a penalty. The score stands at DMU 3-0 UoL. Plenty of time to bring it back and secure victory. Come on boys!

14.05 – Football, Mens 4’s

Our first update of the day comes from the football and its not a great start. The news is that DMU’s fourth team has taken the initiative in that game and scored a vital early goal with just 5 minutes on the clock! DMU 1-0 UoL.

Today is the final day of Varsity and we’re here to bring you updates from todays events. We will have coverage of the Ultimate Frisbee on Mandela Park, the Football at Aylestone Park FC. Live updates will be coming in from the Mens and Women’s Hockey and the Squash.

To round off this day of sporting action we will be bringing you Twitter updates from the Women’s and then the Mens Rugby at Welford Road. You can find us @TheTabLeicester.

Tuesday 19th

We’ve got a statement from the Mens Rugby 2nd team captain on their impending match against DMU on Wednesday afternoon.

In a very brief statement he said:

“We’ve had a great season so far and we’ve got a strong team playing so I’m confident of a win, but it’s varsity so it’s always tough especially away from home. Bobby Holdbrook and Alex Jenks have had really good seasons and have got the potential to be key on the day. Fresher James Matthews is an exciting young fullback who will cause them problems.”

It seems as though the Rugby boys are confident about securing a victory when the match comes around but they know that its going to be a very tough ride!

Its a big day for the Netball girls today with the 3rd’s, 2nd’s and 1st team all in action across this evening. We should be able to keep you updated with proceedings and update you on yesterday’s 4th team action so stay tuned.

Monday 18th

Monday prove to be even quieter with just the Netball 4th team playing. We should be able to bring you the details very shortly of this.

Sunday 17th

Sunday was also a fairly quiet day for this years Varsity competition. The main event was the Mixed Hockey, being played over at St. Margaret’s Pastures and the Fencing also taking place.

Leicester Fencing Club was able to lunge over the line to secure victory with relative style, the final score in that one was Leicester 265, DMU 133. Leicester narrowly missing out on doubling DMU’s score there.

The Mixed Hockey was much more of a close affair. Neither team could break the deadlock during normal time and the match went to a very cagey period of extra time. Unfortunately Leicester were unable to sustain their resolute defence and conceded twice in the extra time periods, losing 2-0. It was a valiant effort from the team who put up strong resistance to a decent DMU outfit.

President of the Leicester Motorsports society, Chris Milsom has topped the leaderboard in race 3. Hints of a DMU resurgence in this one though with Leicester’s racers placing 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th.

The Endurance Race is to follow.

15.49

News from the Motorsports Varsity is that Leicester are showing their racing prowess. Victory was secured in the first race by Sam Snell, the Leicester Vice-President. Leicester’s five racers finished in the first five positions with DMU bringing up the rear.

21.38

Leicester retake the lead with just under 7 minutes left. 2 points is the difference, 50-48. Leicester need to concentrate and put in the hard work now to keep this DMU side at bay.

21.30

At the end of the quarter a huge shot from Habeeb Kusimo ties the game at 45 apiece after Leicester had trailed for a few minutes. Looks like we’re in for another nail biter here!

21.14

Strong effort from Leicester at the start of the second half retaking the lead, taking the score to 38-34. Keep up the good work boys!

20.58

DMU finish the half strongly pushing Leicester back. They will take a 33-31 lead into the second half. Weak defence from the University of Leicester has allowed the lead to slip at the end of the first half, more focus is needed if Leicester are to retake the lead in the second half.

20.49

Leicester are making some huge shots out on the court now taking the score to 29-26. James Dyde is tearing the DeMontfort defence apart as he scores two back to back baskets for Leicester.

20.37

At the end of the first quarter Leicester are winning by 18 points to 17 in a very edgy match. Both teams are playing at a very high intensity.

19.31

Leicester trail as we reach the end of the third quarter, the score currently stands at 40-33. Both teams are displaying very good attacking and defensive skills.

19.16

DMU sprint out of the blocks at the start of the second half pulling out a substantial lead. They have managed to push their lead to 34-22, poor finishing from Leicester has been the  main issue.

19.02

It’s half time and the score are close. DMU are leading 26-22. Neither team has been able to break away and build a substantial lead. Courtney Smith is leading the way for Leicester on offence and defence.

18.56

With just 2 minutes in the half remaining DMU are up 24-20, Leicester will have to improve ever-so slightly to pull victory out of the bag in the second half.

18.49 The score sits at 22-19 in an end to end with plenty of action. Come on Leicester. 18.43 Leicester are coming back after a brief surge from DMU, the score is at 20-16. Thursday 14th

Today is a bit of a quiet one for Varsity 2013 with not much going on. As a result its the perfect opportunity to round up the rest of yesterdays fixtures and give you those all important pictures. So here we go. LUSSC LUSSC put in an incredible performance up at Stoke where they put the De Montfort Ski and Snowboard Club to shame winning their Varsity 4-1, though this was not without its moments. Leicester were off to a winning start as they were victorious in the Women’s Individual and Women’s Dual races. The men from both universities slipped up on their races, quite literally, with both teams wiping out in both races. Each team was awarded a win. Victory was secured when Leicester won the freestyle event, leaving DMU well and truly beaten. ClimbingThe University of Leicester put in another exceptional performance at the climbing events as they were victorious in what was a few tightly fought competition.
