A definitive list of all the problems with toxic veganism

If you don’t know one, it’s probably you

Let’s face it, veganism is a growing trend. Whether its Veganuary or a permanent change, more and more people, especially students, are going vegan.

There is nothing wrong with being vegan, quite the contrary: it’s healthy and environmentally conscious. Most vegans simply want to do their part to help, and enjoy experimenting with new foods. But everyone knows a vegan who takes it a tiny bit too far.

When they’re not bragging about their Nutribullet smoothies, they’re complaining about the ham in the fridge or how much better Violife is than mozzarella (it’s not).

They're admant they are healthier than you

"Vegan Curry for dinner!" "Smoothie for breakfast!"

We get it but when your midnight snack is three packs of Oreos you can’t claim superiority over my cheese sandwich.

They come out with some outrageous ideas

Claiming that simply by being vegan they are lengthening their life, clearing up their skin, and making themselves smarter. "My quinoa salad gives me so much energy and cures hangovers" – tried it, it doesn't.

Avocados, avocados everywhere

Despite the fact they’re not strictly vegan, avocados remain the basis of every vegan diet. Two to three avocados a week is not financially sustainable, people.

"I can’t go out to eat, I’m vegan"

Okay. Yes it is harder to get restaurant or convenience food as a vegan: I’m vegetarian, I get it. But at least give it a try. Tesco will have something in the meal deal, I promise.

"I don’t want meat near my food"

Sharing a fridge with a meat eater isn’t going to contaminate your precious kale or nut milk.

Meanwhile the carnivore of the house…

Being ridiculously strict despite only turning vegan a week ago

"Yeah my life has changed since going vegan, I feel so much healthier", it has been two days hun.

Not quite everything is vegan

Live your best vegan life while wearing your leather shoes and downing Guinness or Fosters doesn’t quite count. British beers are commonly processed using animal by-products such as gelatine. Try spirits (lucky you) or Belgian or German beers such as Corona or Heineken.

Sharing graphic PETA videos on Facebook

While most vegans don’t do this, some LOVE to share videos of sad cows and dead piglets. We get it, your diet is superior because you don’t kill the little piggies. But no-one wants to see that when doing their morning Facebook browse.

Look at this rescued little piglet frolic in the sunshine! ?? [Footage courtesy of Viva!]

Assuming if you’re not vegan, you’re not educated

We can’t all afford to shop in Waitrose and Holland & Barratt when we’re not ordering our fresh fruit and veggie from Ocado. We’re on a student budget, some people just can’t afford to be vegan.

#veganlifestyle #healthy

How do you know someone is vegan? They'll usually tell you within five minutes of meeting them.

You don’t need to tell everyone in every Instagram post that you don’t eat eggs. If people care, you will have told them in person (trust me, you will have). Other than that, no-one needs to be told you’re vegan every 10 minutes.

"You can’t eat this because you’re not vegan"

Vegan food is not reserved for vegans, in the same way vegetarian food is not reserved for vegetarians. If you’re vegan, don’t give people dirty looks for getting a quinoa salad. Vegetables are not reserved for you.

"Everyone should go vegan, we’ll convert them!"

Honestly, the vegan lifestyle is not sustainable for everyone. On a health level, people are often barred by food allergies and intolerances. But the truth is most people just don’t want to be vegan. They love meat and/or dairy, they’re a picky eater, whatever their reason, it’s their choice. The fact you think you’re saving the environment doesn’t mean others will see it the same.
