There’s going to be a swimming gala at the Roger Stevens pond

I’d rather not swim in that pond, thanks

On the 8th December, there’s going to be a swimming gala at the Roger Stevens pond.

Prizes are all vodka, with a bottle of Grey Goose for the winner, a bottle of Smirnoff vodka for second place, and the person to make third place can drown their sorrows in a bottle of Aldi vodka.

One of the organisers of the event, Tom Birchy, said: “So, The Cooling Pond is perfect for a gala. It’s in a central location, perfect for spectators and competitors to access. The Gala will be held at 15:30 on Friday 8th December.”

“There will be no divisions, just a free for all race for our competitors to demonstrate their outdoor pond swimming abilities. We have prizes for our top 3 swimmers.  We think the event will be a great success”

When asked about his inspiration for the gala, he said: “So I was walking past the pond on the way back from my lectures and I stopped and just sat on the benches near it. I thought, wow, wouldn’t it be a great idea to jump in.”

“I thought about it for a while and then decided that I wasn’t wearing suitable clothing. But then I had another idea, what if I hosted a Leeds Swimming Gala here. The pond doesn’t get much use, and the ducks seem to have abandoned it for the winter.’

There is also a Facebook event for the gala. Currently, 82 people are going and 659 people are interested.

Although the magazine Cosmopolitan claims that there is a rumour that if you swim in the pond you can’t graduate – on that note, best of luck to all of the competitors.
